Azagiya Theeye

Tamil (Nataraj, Poornima, Lavanya)
Cast: Prasanna, Navya Nair, Prakash Raj
Director: Radha Mohan

What is a good film? Azagiya Theeye will provide you the answer. No vulgar dialogues, clean story, good screenplay, no unnecessary fights, no overacting — it has all these and much more to offer.

Actor-producer Prakash Raj along with director Radhamohan, has given a different kind of a film, far from the routine stuff.

The story unfolds in a flashback. Chandran (Prasanna), has three friends and the common factor which binds them together is Tamil films.

They live in the terrace of a house in a small room. They are desperate to make ends meet.

Chandran’s dream is to become a big director and others also have their own dreams.

There is a strike in the film industry and the four friends try and do odd jobs like becoming cartoon caricatures in MGM, cooking at marriages etc.

A friend of Chandran comes with a request to bail out Nandhini (Navya Nair), daughter of a tyrant father from a marriage with a software engineer Aravind (Prakash Raj).

She is not ready for the marriage and wants Chandran’s help. He devises a plan and acts as her lover and stops Aravind from marrying Nandhini.

Aravind, after overcoming his initial disappointment, starts liking him and the story takes a twist here. He gets the couple married at the registrar’s office and Nandhini’s father throws her out of the house.

Aravind presents a new apartment but a confused Chandran and Nandhini start living in the apartment. It starts as a friendship, which soon turns to be love for Chandran but Nandhini still treats him as a friend.

He gets an offer to become a director and Nandhini gets a job in Bangalore.

The story leads to an interesting climax.

Prasanna gives a very fine performance. The other three friends from the traditional Koothuppattarai (an amateur drama group in Chennai) are equally good.

Debutante Navya Nair, though lacking glamour, fits the role like a T. It’s Prakash Raj who steals the limelight.

Director Radhamohan deserves a pat for giving a neat family entertainer.

The characters are well etched and portrayed in a natural manner. Ramesh Vinayagam’s music is melodious.
